Gamers Beware! PlayStation Catastrophe Still Plaguing PS3s
What's Going On?
The geek meltdown that began last night continues unabated this evening as Sony plods through its PlayStation quagmire, largely due to 2010 being mislabeled as a leap year. The ordeal started when clocks rolled over to March 1st and older (non-PS3 Slim) PlayStation owners began experiencing a myriad of bizarre and unfixable problems, including blocked access to the PlayStation Network, corrupted trophy data, and an inability to launch certain games and videos.How to Handle the PS3 Situation:
While the official source of the fiasco remains a mystery, Sony believes "that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system," which may be linked to faulty leap year programming. The company also contends that the problem is isolated to older models, though apparently not all, and has recommended that owners of anything other than the slim consoles keep their PS3s turned off.Millions of frenzied gamers are undoubtedly fiending for some online action right now, but Sony said that it does hope to have everything resolved within 24-hours. (That's little consolation to the devoted consumers who spent hundreds of dollars for their consoles and routinely pay more than $50 for individual games. Some free swag from the PSN store as recompense, maybe?)
End in Sight?
Despite Sony's 24-hour claim, the problem may actually fix itself at midnight GMT tonight, so to at least help pass the time (if you appreciate intense geek-freakouts), the PS3 message boards are abundant with quality tech meme humor, including the obvious Skynet and late-Y2K jokes.Update: No official word from Sony yet, but we're seeing reports from Joystiq (and on Twitter and Facebook) that PS3s are back up and running. I had a problem connection to the PS3 network this afternoon. I noticed that my clock on the PS3 had reset itself to 01/01/2000 12:00:00 AM so I went in and corrected the date and time and everything worked fine again. This was at 12:09 PM exactly.

Exactly as MishaganMinion said I reset my clock earlier this morning, cause I noticed the date also, turned the system off and back on and it was working fine.

looks like sony dropped the ball again. i just had my blue laser go out on me. 191 dollars to fix it because my warranty ran out. cousin just bought a new one and same thing. so this is a known problem and sony wont help unless i pay 191. its their fault the lasers are messing up not from playing it. sony customer service had me on the phone for 2 hrs to tell me i had to pay. i wouldnt buy this crap anymore and i had the ps 1, ps 2, and i bought ps3 when it was 600 2 yrs ago. at least i hear the xbox ring of death is fixed for free from xbox

mine started working again around 7pm...on 3/1/10...it's bs, but at least it seems fine for now...sony needs to nut up and give a little back for the trouble

I am having the same problem right now with my ps3 not allowing me to sign onto the psn. So it is not letting me play Heavy Rain. While my fiancee who has a ps3 slim was playing on the other side and he was able to sign on. I was freaking out bc I thought my ps3 was broken. This is no big deal as long as they can fix it. As for what I am reading about the lasers EVERY electronic devices laser can go at any time they usually are only supposed to last 2 years depending on what you do with it. If you run it all the time etc. Hopefully this bug will be gone by tomorrow.

the blue laser is the part the generates teh "blue" light for reading PS3 games and bluray discs.

For as much as I'd love to go: "HA-HA!", and then go all anti-Sony, I think I'm going to stay low-key on this one, because if it's a legitimate "Whoops! Screwed up the coding!," issue, that can happen to anyone. I hope not too many people had too much in the way of problems!

This happened to me do. I was mad but I'm not a nerd that stays playinq the PS3. I just wanted to play Mw2 for a little while to pass the time but. Sony messed up but thinqs happen like that, you know?
